How to read your level

Maturity levels describe repeatability, not ambition. An organisation running one excellent AI system by heroic effort is less mature than one running three ordinary ones predictably, because the second can be planned around and the first cannot. If your level reads lower than you expected, it is usually measuring the absence of process rather than the absence of capability.

Levels are also not a ladder you climb evenly. Skipping governance to move faster on delivery is a common and sometimes correct choice, but it accumulates, and it tends to present itself as an audit problem long after the decision that caused it.

What it cannot see

It cannot see how much of your current practice depends on specific people. That is the single most useful thing to know about a maturity level and the hardest to self-assess. If one named person leaving would drop you a level, you are at the lower level today.

What to do next

Pick the one dimension where the gap between your level and the next is smallest and close it properly, rather than raising three dimensions by half a step. Partial maturity in several places is how organisations end up with the cost of process and none of the benefit. This runs entirely in your browser and nothing is recorded.
